OBITUARY

Sheri Siegel, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to so many, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, at the age of 62. Sheri was born in Columbus, Georgia on March 27, 1962. After graduating high school in Columbus, Sheri attended the University of Georgia for her undergraduate degree. After graduation, she began her pursuits in medicine, working for the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. Her professional career in Veterinary Medicine began at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Tuskegee University where she graduated first in her class. With her degree in hand, she received a prestigious veterinary internship in New York, then went to California and worked in a veterinary clinic. There, she made lifelong friendships as she developed her professional skills. Always seeking more challenge, Sheri shifted her veterinary experience by directing her career to veterinary radiation oncology to treat animals with cancer. To that end, she obtained a fellowship at Duke University in North Carolina where she excelled. From there, she relocated to Massachusetts where she worked at Angell Animal Medical Center, a part of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In 2001, with a steadfast resolve to make a lasting impact in her field and with a good sense of business, Sheri co-founded The New England Veterinary Oncology Group (NEVOG) in Waltham, MA. Her business model emphasized team cohesiveness and employee satisfaction as she grew NEVOG into one of the leading veterinary oncology practices in the country. In 2017, Sheri sold her practice and retired. For Sheri, complacency was not a response to opportunity. She pursued life with passion. She was an avid low handicap golfer and she played in many amateur tournaments. When she retired, she relocated to Reynolds Lake Oconee, Greensboro, Georgia, where she was surrounded by six premium golf courses. Sheri made so many wonderful friends at Reynolds and their compassionate expressions of empathy comforted Sheri’s family in her final days. Sheri’s energy and zest for life led her on great travels to Nepal, Thailand, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Dolomite Alps, and she visited her lifelong friends in Boston, Hawaii, New York, California, North Carolina and so many other places. She traveled to Alaska annually to provide her veterinary skills for the Iditarod, the world’s most famous dog race. In her first year at the Iditarod, she was interviewed by the organization to share her experience. When asked by the interviewer what she knew for sure, Sheri responded, “What I know for sure in life is that it’s short and you cannot predict it. And so you’ve got to take advantage of experiences in life and go with the flow, and just try to enjoy life.” These guiding principals embodied Sheri’s life. Sheri will be missed deeply by her parents, Elaine and Leon Siegel, brother Michael (Dawn) Siegel, sister Faye (Craig) Lefkoff, and her large, extended family.
