With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Richard Charles Rose, 78, resident of Atlanta. After graduating Grady High School, Richard attended the University of Tennessee eventually joining the Air Force.
He made life long friends, some from his early childhood, who he continued to meet regularly for dinner. He had two rules for these gatherings, “no cell phones and no wives.” However, he would quickly confess the most important person in his life was his wife, Joanie, whom he met after she moved to Atlanta from Montana.
After his military service, Richard began his career at Fulton Loan Office where he was a natural in the pawnshop business and was known as the Prince of Peters Street. “FLO” was a family owned business established in the 1920’s which he enthusiastically expanded into a very successful enterprise. As of June 1, he had owned the pawnshop for 57 years. Up until last week, Richard continued to work going to the Pawnshop most days.
Richard met Joan and quickly began a love story that lasted nearly 46 years. With unfaltering devotion, they enjoyed years working alongside each other, traveling and sharing homes in Montana, Florida, and Atlanta.
Richard had an immense joy for life and people. He had many hobbies including racing Porsches, collecting antique cars and flying remote control model airplanes. He was a real food lover and enjoyed trying new cuisines. He and Joan were quintessential entertainers and opened their home for many memorable parties.
He is predeceased by his parents, Sidney and Gertrude Rose, his sister, Jackie Wolf, his mother and father-in-law, Patrick and Molly Wilhelm, and his niece Kayla Wilhelm. He is survived by his wife, Joan Rose, his beloved Ziva, his brother-in-laws Lee (Mary), Ward (Kathy), his nephews Connor (Jaycee), Jeff (Toni), nieces Alicia (Brandon), Bridgett, Andi (Gordie) great nephews Alexander, Barrett, great nieces, Leigha, Reese, Jessica (Ethan), Madeline, Carly, and great great nephew Elijah.
Richard will be remembered for his captivating smile, infectious laughter, and genuine kindness to everyone he met. He was truly a prince among men. He brought love and laughter to every room.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 26, graveside at Arlington Memorial Park at 11:30 am. Shiva will follow immediately after the service. Donations can be made to American Heart Association.
