OBITUARY:
Mark J. Safra, M.D.

Mark J. Safra, M.D., of Atlanta, Georgia, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, respected ophthalmologist, and beloved member of Atlanta’s Jewish community, passed away following a remarkable and courageous fight against cancer.

For more than 30 years, Mark served the Atlanta Jewish community as a mohel, participating in one of the most meaningful moments in the lives of generations of families. His commitment to Jewish life extended well beyond his work as a mohel. He was a dedicated member of Ahavath Achim Synagogue and Congregation Beth Shalom, as well as Ohr HaTorah, and his deep sense of Yiddishkeit was central to the way he lived his life.

Above all, Mark was devoted to his family. He and his beloved wife, Clara, shared 54 years of marriage and built a life centered on family, faith, friendship, and love. He was a proud and loving father to Seth (Jana) of Bethesda, Maryland; Rabbi Michael (Sharon) of Rockville, Maryland; and Renee Kutner (Davi) of Atlanta. He took immense joy in being a grandfather to Lauren and Jared Safra; Rebecca, Ethan and Gila Safra; and Sam, Danit and Noah Kutner.  Mark was also a devoted brother to his siblings Jan (Tom z”l) Goldmann and Steve Safra (z”l).

Mark embraced life with energy and enthusiasm. He loved sailing, music, tennis, and especially being on or near the water. He shared these passions with family and dear friends, leaving behind many treasured memories. In confronting cancer, Mark demonstrated in extraordinary measure the strength of character, courage, and resilience that had defined him throughout his life, with his devoted caregiver Flo.

The funeral service will be held at Congregation Beth Shalom (5303 Winters Chapel Rd, 30360) on Thursday, August 13, at 2pm, followed by a burial at North Atlanta Memorial Park (5188 Winters Chapel Rd, 30360).  Livestream information can be found at jewishfuneralcare.com.

Shiva will be held at the home of Clara Safra, 2662 Fontainebleau Dr, 30360, on the following day and times: 
     Thursday (8/13), 6:00 - 9:00 PM, with an evening service at 8:00 PM
     Friday (8/14), 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, with a morning service at 7:30 AM. 
     Sunday (8/16), 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM, with a morning service at 8:30 AM; 6:00 - 9:00 PM, with an evening service at 8:00 PM
     Monday (8/17), 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM, with a morning service at 7:30 AM; 6:00 - 9:00 PM, with an evening service at 8:00 PM
     Tuesday (8/18), 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM, with a morning service at 7:30 AM; 6:00 - 9:00 PM, with an evening service at 8:00 PM

Shacharit on Wednesday (8/19) morning will be held at the home of Renee and Davi Kutner.
