Marcia Greenberg Kuniansky, daughter of Ann and Sam Greenberg, always kept a vase of flowers on her dining room table. She never actually really wanted to be out in nature, but she loved flowers on the table, fresh-picked from the garden outside her back door.
She and her beloved sisters, Sybil and Reva, shared one bathroom and a secret passageway through the closet in their childhood home on Conroy Street in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a cheerleader at Ramsey High School much to the disbelief of her kids who couldn't imagine her jumping, but yeah, there are pictures, so go figure.
Mom left Alabama and started a family tradition of attending the University of Georgia. (Thanks, Mom, we didn’t want to Roll Tide.) She was president of her sorority, SDT, and we’re sure ran things with her normal attention to detail and enthusiasm for social events.
After college she headed to Atlanta where she met her husband Harry Kuniansky who predeceased her a few short weeks ago. They were married for 58 years. They raised their children, Jody and Eric, mostly in Augusta, Georgia while Dad taught at Augusta College and Mom worked in the placement office. Unable to continue work due to chronic back pain, she still got dinner on the table consisting of a meat and four sides every meal at 6:30 every night. She was a good cook and an even better baker. You would be hard-pressed to find a person who loved chocolate more than Mom, although Jody is trying her best to continue the legacy.
Mom was a fierce advocate for her children and family, even if it meant embarrassing them in public. Jody recalls a particularly mortifying moment in 6th grade when Mom marched the two of them to the principal’s office to inform him that there was no toilet paper in the school bathroom. As adults, we’ve gotten over the embarrassment (mostly) and realized that she was really teaching us to stand up for ourselves.
After Dad retired, they moved back to Atlanta and Mom found a wonderful group of friends in her new neighborhood at the Deerings. She kept busy walking in the morning with the “girls,” meeting for lunches, trivia nights, book clubs (she was a voracious reader) and bridge groups. But as much as she loved her new community, she yearned to travel and see new places. We cannot count how many times she encouraged us to “Get out there and travel while you can”. Taking a cruise was her favorite mode of travel and she and Dad crossed the Atlantic several times on the Queen Mary, among many other trips. She loved the mountains and they continued to take weekends away in North Georgia as long as they could. She enjoyed going to Cherokee, but that was probably more for the slots than the scenic views.
She loved spending time with her family and was particularly thrilled that Eric and his wife Erica lived less than fifteen minutes away. Sydney and Ryan loved when Grandma babysat them because that meant splashing in her oversized tub. As the kids got older, playing games like Uno and Telestrations led to many nights of laughter around Eric’s dining room table. She was less happy that Jody and her husband David lived far away in New Jersey, except for the opportunity it allowed her in visiting New York City. She especially enjoyed taking Noa and Ethan to Broadway shows.
We will miss her wisdom, her strength, and even her frequent requests for tech support. Marcia was a loyal friend, a loving wife and a damn good mother and grandmother.
