Loretta Taninbaum passed away peacefully after a long battle with MS and Lupus. She left behind a legacy of love and devotion to family, warmth to friends, and immeasurable kindness to strangers.

Loretta was born and raised in Calgary, Canada and then moved to Atlanta, Georgia in October 1984, when she married her husband Warren.

Loretta dedicated her life to her children, Erica and Hannah, as a stay-at-home mother, ensuring the home was a welcoming and loving environment. She met many other new mothers and invited them to the house often for get-togethers. She brought the kids to reading time at the library, volunteered her time at Sunday school, and spent countless hours designing Halloween costumes that were unique and won awards. The girls were her greatest pride.

She was also an incredible cook, having learned many Italian recipes from her parents and adopting Jewish recipes for the Holidays. She loved to plant flowers and work in the yard. She was also a devoted wife that kept the “home front” running while her husband was away on military duty or deployments. She never complained, even when Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis started to take a physical toll on her. She would joke about the many falls she experienced as her MS advanced. Her greatest worry was whether she would be able to hold a future grandchild in her arms. She accepted her transition from cane to walker and finally to wheelchair with grace, always finding ways to keep her spirit and attitude up.

In recent years, she was able to share in the joy of seeing her two daughters marry and the birth of her first grandchild, Emmett. He made her smile and gave her endless delight.

Loretta is predeceased by her parents, Francis and Dominic Chiappini, and her father-in-law, William Letovsky. Her mother-in-law, Hinda Letovsky resides in Montreal, Canada. She is survived by her loving husband, Warren Taninbaum; her children, Erica DeRitis (Brandon), Hannah Collier (Graham); her siblings, Perry Chiappini (Melissa), Carol Zanin (Sandro); her brothers-in-law, Gary Taninbaum (Leslie), Charles Letovsky (Sharon), Stanley Letovsky (Tish), Stuart Letovsky (ChinChia); her grandchild, Emmett DeRitis; extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were touched by her warmth and generosity.

Her memory will remain a source of comfort, inspiration, and love to all who knew her. In celebration of Loretta’s life, memorial contributions can be made to the Shepherd Center Multiple Sclerosis Program. Donate to Shepherd Center Donation Page.
