OBITUARY
Our mother, Libbie Lifchez Fechter, died on September 16, 2026 at the age of 103, just short of her 104th birthday on October 1. Libbie, as she was known to all, had 8 children, 15 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren (so far). She was born to Hattie Rebecca Stein Lifchez and Moses Lifchez in 1922 in Columbia, SC. She and Robert Mordecai Fechter (Bobby), of blessed memory, were married on December 5, 1942. Bobby died on September 29, 1995, after 53 years of marriage. Except for a sojourn in California and New Mexico during WWII, Libbie lived her entire life in Columbia and never wanted to leave.

She is survived by seven of her eight children. Alan Howard Fechter (Yolanda), Nancy Sharon Kedem (Ben Zion, of blessed memory), Janis Fechter Kirtz (Harold), Cary Erwin Fechter, David William Fechter (Karen Volund), Michael Alexander Fechter (Tia) and Toodie Fechter Murray (Robert). Her daughter, Harriet Rae Romano, died in 2013.

Libbie was known for her beauty, her style, her wit, her vivacious personality and her prolific production of children. She made lifelong friends with all age groups, with many still seeking her advice and counsel to the end. She lived in the wonderful mid-century modern house that she designed in 1950 and resided in until her death.

Libbie’s concern for community and children included serving on boards and raising funds for Hadassah, Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Planned Parenthood and as a guardian ad litem. She also served as a docent at the SC State Museum for many years.

A graveside service was held at Emanuel-El Maryville Cemetery in Charleston on September 18 2026 at 11:00 am. The live stream can be accessed at https://youtube.com/live/L4eQ3rsoMug?feature=share.

We will observe one night of shiva for our mother on Tuesday September 22, 2026 at 7:00 pm at the home of Janis and Harold Kirtz at 8150 Innsbruck Dr, Sandy Springs GA 30350. Libbie died between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, a most auspicious day to enter eternity, as was Libbie’s style.
