OBITUARY
In Loving Memory of Jerry Richard Hunt
April 27, 1947 – January 11, 2025
Jerry Richard Hunt, age 77, of Norcross, Georgia, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Known by all for his integrity, honor, and quiet generosity, Jerry lived a life rooted in kindness, humility, and a steadfast dedication to his family, faith, and community.
Born on April 27, 1947, the oldest of three sons to George and Lorraine Hunt, Jerry grew up in Miami, Florida, and graduated from Southwest Miami High School in 1965. He continued his education at Miami Dade Junior College before receiving an opportunity to work for the National Cash Register Company (NCR), which brought him to Atlanta in 1968. A few years later, Jerry embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, founding the American Forms Company (AFCO), a successful data processing forms business.
In 1979, Jerry married Margo, the love of his life, beginning a 45-year partnership filled with devotion, shared dreams, and countless adventures. Together, they founded Sunrise Health Management in 1994, successfully growing the company before selling it in 2000. At the age of 53, Jerry began his well-earned retirement, embracing a life dedicated to family, philanthropy, and pursuing his passions.
Jerry and Margo shared a love for the open seas, spending many joyful years boating and exploring the southeastern coastline. Their travels extended around the world–throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East–with Jerry always ready to meticulously plan the next family trip, ensuring every detail was perfect. A devoted Atlanta Braves fan and season ticket holder, Jerry cherished attending games with his family, including the unforgettable experience of cheering on the Braves to their 1995 World Series victory.
Soon after retiring, Jerry and Margo were invited to a private meeting with President Jimmy Carter, where they were asked to support the Carter Center’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program. Moved by the opportunity to make a difference, Jerry and Margo donated resources to build and sustain 10 freshwater wells in Togo, Africa, providing clean drinking water to prevent the transmission of Guinea worm disease. Togo later became one of the first African countries to eliminate Guinea worm disease in 2015. Jerry’s commitment to the Carter Center deepened, and he was later appointed to the Carter Center Board of Councilors, where he proudly served for many years.
Jerry’s legacy of generosity and faith was equally profound within his local community. He and Margo were founding members of Temple Beth David, the first synagogue in Gwinnett County. Jerry dreamed of seeing the temple grow and prosper, and he dedicated his time and resources to making that vision a reality. He served as a board member and treasurer for many years, overseeing the temple’s finances with wisdom and care. Jerry and Margo donated the funds to build the Sunrise Sanctuary addition of Temple Beth David, and Jerry personally oversaw its construction—a contribution that remains a cornerstone of the temple’s growth and community.
In addition, Jerry served as treasurer of the Gwinnett Community Clinic for five years. The clinic’s mission—to give needed medical care to the less fortunate in Gwinnett County, Georgia—was a cause close to Jerry’s heart, and his contributions helped ensure access to vital healthcare for countless individuals in need.
Known for his intellectual curiosity, thoughtful conversations, and old-soul wisdom, Jerry left a deep impression on everyone he met. Despite his many accomplishments, Jerry never sought the spotlight, choosing instead to quietly share his success and resources to enrich the lives of others. His humility, dedication, and vision continue to inspire all who knew him.
Jerry’s greatest pride and joy were his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margo Grbinich-Hunt; his daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and David Wattenmaker; his son, Alex Hunt; and his beloved grandchildren: Hailey Hunt McCoy, Landrey Hunt, Clara Wattenmaker, Asher Wattenmaker, Darcey Hunt, Eli Wattenmaker, and Mavery Hunt. He was preceded in death by his son, Bryan Hunt, of blessed memory, whose spirit Jerry carried with him always.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00 AM on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Temple Beth David in Snellville, Georgia, with Rabbi Richard Baroff officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Guardians of the Torah, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, or Temple Beth David, reflecting Jerry’s lifelong dedication to faith, compassion, and service.
Though he is no longer with us, Jerry’s memory will remain a blessing and a source of inspiration. His 16-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease was fought with courage and resilience, a testament to the strength of his spirit. His legacy of faith, generosity, and devotion to his family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
