OBITUARY
Jane Steele, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025. She died as she lived, surrounded by love, humor, and family.
Jane was born on June 8, 1946, the second child of Ruth and Charles Edelblum of Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn, and attended Sheepshead Bay High School. She attended Long Island University (LIU), where she met her life partner and soul mate, Cliff Steele, during her first week of school. Jane and Cliff were a love story for the ages; they were married for nearly 59 years and wished for many more. Jane earned an associates degree from LIU, but she was most proud of the degree awarded to her by the Law Wives Association of SUNY Buffalo Law School for “Putting Hubby Through.”
Jane gave birth to three children, Halley, Jason, and Dara, during the first ten years of their marriage. Jane and her family moved from Buffalo, NY to Sandy Springs, Georgia in 1978. Once her children were of school age, Jane spent her days as the office manager of Cliff’s law practice, allowing him to focus on the law, while she took care of everything else.
Always eager to “try something new,” Jane (and Cliff) were avid travelers, leaving the country for weeks and months at a time during extensive trips to remote and lesser known locations and visiting over fifty countries. Jane loved all shades of blue, but especially the blue of the Caribbean Sea, where she and Cliff could explore the unknown undersea world while SCUBA diving. She filled their home with art and keepsakes from their journeys. When their travels slowed, Jane looked forward to multiple weekly Mahjong games with her dearest girlfriends.
Jane loved her family and extended family fiercely. She was happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren. With family split between Atlanta and Denver, ever the egalitarians, Jane and Cliff maintained a second home in Colorado, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Jane loved spending time in Colorado, whether she was skiing, hiking, watching the wildlife from her windows, or spending time with those she loved.
Jane was a force to be reckoned with, and her strength showed at its greatest in the past two years, as her will-to-live overpowered the cancer in her body. She countered chemotherapy with humor and amazed her doctors with her positive attitude. May we all treasure life the way Jane did.
She is survived by her husband Cliff Steele; children Halley Morochnik (Paul), Jason Steele (Janna), and Dara Steele-Belkin (Jeff Belkin); grandchildren Rachel and Zach (Adrianna Vera) Morochnik, Sabrina, Vivian, and Eli Belkin, Ilana, Evie, and Ari Steele; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
There will be a private graveside service at Arlington Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at The Temple, 1589 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA, at 2:00 pm on March 30, 2025, with a reception to follow. The memorial service will be live streamed at https://streaming.the-temple.org/
