OBITUARY:
Jane Ellen (Hirschfield) Bernstein passed away on August 9, 2025, in Decatur, Georgia, at the age of 84.
Born in Boston to Marjorie and Robert L. Hirschfield, Jane was the eldest of three children. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from Brandeis University (’62), a Master’s in Education from Harvard University (’63), and a J.D. from Wayne State University (’76).
The beloved mother and Nana was predeceased by her devoted husband of 57 years, the Hon. Judge Stan Bernstein (1941–2020). She is survived by their three children, Mark (Tess), Paul, and Julie (Seth Roseman), and by her cherished grandchildren Nicholas, Emily, Jedidiah, Ava, and Sonia, who were a constant source of pride and joy.
Jane was a respected lawyer who practiced family and elder law in Michigan, California, Arizona, Massachusetts, and New York. She was also dedicated to providing pro bono legal support to those in need. She served as a Long-Term Care Ombudsman and as a Guardian ad Litem in Suffolk County Family Court, giving voice to the vulnerable, before retiring in Atlanta.
An avid reader, cookbook collector, and knitter, Jane will be remembered for her resilience, unwavering loyalty, sense of humor, and for the way she welcomed people with kindness and generosity. Jane found peace in being near the ocean — it brought her comfort, clarity, and a sense of calm. In keeping with her wishes, her ashes will be mingled with her husband’s and released to the sea off Cape Cod in a lasting tribute to their life together.
