Hymie Victor Shemaria sadly passed away on May 8, 2025, preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Sukey Shemaria. He was a loving and devoted brother, son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was born in Atlanta, GA on June 17, 1932, to Bennie and Matilda Shemaria. Hymie led a life of humility, simplicity, and integrity, with unwavering love for his family, friends, and his community. Growing up in the Atlanta Sephardic community, filled with family and friends, he attended Grady High School, where he met Marian Sue Hoffman, who became the love of his life. He served his country for two years during the Korean War, then returned to Atlanta to work for his Poppa at Bennie’s Shoe Repair. Ultimately proposing to Sukey, they married on August 8, 1955, at The Temple, in Atlanta, GA. This began the story of their life together. Over the next six years, they welcomed three beautiful daughters: Marcia, Laurie, and Kathy who adored their daddy.
With his two brothers, Jack (of blessed memory) and Louie, he acquired the business from his Poppa, which became the Atlanta institution known as Bennie’s Shoes. Hymie’s passions included golf, playing poker with his buddies, bowling with his wife, serving in the community and OVS, traveling the world, going to the movies, but mostly spending time with his beloved family. Hymie was blessed with three sons-in-law: Matthew Green, Joel Rosenberg (Laurie), and Roman Canales (Kathy), four grandchildren: Melissa Kaplan (Kenny), Michael Green (Michelle), Adam Rosenberg (Jazmin), and Hallie Rosenberg, and also five great grandchildren: Rory, Elon, Madison, Isaac, and Eloise.
Hymie lived his life with the theme of togetherness and which encouraged a family bond that will never be broken. Everyone who knew him adored him, loved his sense of humor, and the way he would make them feel special. He will truly be missed.
