Estelle Karp of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on August 15, 2024 surrounded by loving family and beloved caregivers. She was the daughter of Pansy and Leon Mallon of Kansas City, Missouri.
She had a very full life. After she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in voice, she went to New York City to study voice with a prominent singing coach. This resulted in a contract with the Metropolitan Opera. She declined the contract to get married. In Kansas City, she met the love of her life when singing at the KCJCC dance while Herbert was on leave. It was love at first sight!
Their relationship grew through letter writing. Their plans for a life together were delayed for a year after Estelle’s singing talent was discovered. Herbert agreed to delay their wedding for the year of her tour with a musical troupe as their soloist. The tour culminated in a performance at Carnegie Hall.
Estelle was very active singing in the Atlanta community. She sang for hundreds of weddings throughout her adult life. She was also very involved in the Ahavath Achim Synagogue Sisterhood shows and was soloist of their choir for decades.
Estelle was actively involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a lifetime member of Hadassah. She was an avid Mah Jongg player, winning even in the last days of her life. She was the last living member of a five couple gourmet club that lasted almost 40 years. They prepared all the food themselves. Both she and Herbert were passionate collectors of Asian antiques.
She is survived by her children, Sharon Levi (Robert) and Lauri Lavine (Steven). Grandchildren: Audra Priluck (Jason), Traci Wilensky and Chad Lavine (Julia). Great-Grandchildren: Justin and Garrett Priluck, Ava and Dylan Wilensky and Olivia Lavine.
