Edwin “Ed” Mark Benkowitz

March 23, 1943 – August 30, 2026

Edwin “Ed” Mark Benkowitz, age 83, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2026, reunited with the love of his life, Carolyn.

Born on March 23, 1943, in Lakewood, New Jersey, Ed was the son of Beatrice and Isidore Benkowitz and brother to Stephen Benkowitz. It was also in Lakewood that he met his childhood neighbor, Carolyn, whom he married in 1969. Together, they shared 56 years of devoted marriage and family life. 

Having attended Rutgers University, Ed earned a degree in history, a subject that remained a lifelong passion alongside his love of classic western movies and sports, especially cheering on the Atlanta Braves. Dedicated to giving back to his community, Ed was heavily involved with the New Jersey Jaycees, eventually serving as President of the Lakewood chapter. When asked recently what he enjoyed most about his time with the organization, his answer was simple: “Just helping people.”

Ed built an award-winning career in Georgia real estate and held operational leadership roles throughout the hospitality industry with brands including Marriott and Holiday Inn, traveling extensively to conduct hotel quality inspections. For Ed, quality control and preparedness were second nature. His daughters fondly remember vacations that included impromptu hotel inspections as well as home fire drills, complete with a whistle, stopwatch, and rope ladder tossed from the second-floor window. Even in early retirement, Ed didn’t slow down; he went to work at CarMax which gave him the chance to do what he loved most: to meet and chat with new people.

To know Ed was to know a man who never met a stranger. A self-appointed comedian, he delighted in inducing laughter and showed affection through playful jabs and friendly sarcasm. If he was teasing you, you knew you were in his good graces. Above all, Ed was defined by his kindness and his devotion to Carolyn. Even as his health declined, his thoughts remained anchored to her care.

Ed is survived by his four daughters, Dina (Erich), Meryl, Alyse (Gabriel), and Caryn (Jon); and his beloved grandsons, Skyler, Brendan, and Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Stephen, and his wife Carolyn.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Arlington Memorial Park, located at 201 Mount Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
