OBITUARY:

William Newman Friedman (88 yrs) of Alpharetta Georgia, formerly from Fredericksburg, Virginia passed away Monday, April 15, 2024. William was born to Jack and Estelle Friedman in Richmond, Virginia.  He grew up in Columbia, South Carolina where he graduated from Dreher High School. He attended the University of North Carolina and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. He met Ruth Torvik at MCV, who became his wife and lifelong love of 64 years. Upon graduation from dental school, he served in the U.S. Army as Captain in the Dental Corp and was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia from 1962 until 1965. He and his family moved to Fredericksburg in 1965 where he had a private dental practice until retiring in 2005 to Hartwell Georgia. Dr. Friedman was dedicated to his patients and always gave the best care with a warm smile and engaging conversation. He earned the distinguished designation of Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. Will was actively involved in Temple Beth Sholom in Fredericksburg and B’nai Israel in Anderson, South Carolina. He lived his life following the Torah and Jewish traditions. He was president at the Fredericksburg temple for two terms and on the board of trustees. Will enjoyed many hobbies including boating, sailing, fishing, and camping. He was always full of joy on the Chesapeake Bay where he kept a sailboat and fishing boat for many years. He was also an avid singer and performed with several choirs over the years including The Fredericksburg Community Chorus, St. Paul’s Masterworks choir, and the Beth Sholom choir. He performed in Community Theater, enjoyed classical music and opera. Most of all, Will loved his family. He often said that his wife and three daughters were the joys of his life. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, daughters Anne (Doug), Jill (Alan) and Estelle (Mike), grandchildren, Andrew (Kelly), Michael (Adreanna), Daniel (Naomi), Amy, Justin, Tyler and four great-grandchildren as well as his sister, Sandra, brother Bernard and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all who he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his brother Sigmund and sister-in-law Dolores.

 A graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, 1902 Plank Road, Fredericksburg, Virginia on Friday, April 19th at 2:00 pm.
